  1. THE INSTRUCTION OF the SUKUTARU-program

  3. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS                         *******************************

  7. - When the program starts , You must either open a  *.SMP-file or
  8. create a new family tree.
  9. Menu "FILE/OPEN" opens an existing file. 
  10.

  12. The tree must be built beginning from the oldest generations.
  13. The program does not approve a person, who's parent isn't yet in the tree.

  16. THE MOST USEFUL FUNCTIONS IN "SUKUTARU" ARE:
  17. -"9 BRANCHES GRAPHICS MODE"
  18. -"LIST SEARCH"
  19. -"BRANCHES"

  27. THE "5 BRANCHES" GRAPHICS MODE allows you combine files... for example if
  28. you have some relatives who also use SUKUTARU, you can put 
  29. your works together and thus save a lot of work !!!
  30. It only needs a few clicks by the mouse button ... 
  31. (start on the "combine files"-box).        (only in SUKUTARU ?)  ...

  34. Changing notes in graphic modes: press the middle mouse button or
  35. F10, when the cursor is in the right place.

  37. Text scrolling: place the MOUSE cursor up/down on screen. To stop scrolling,
  38. place the cursor back to the center !

  41. On this same basis is also made the account book program TILIPUU
  42.         -You may find it in some BBS:s by the name money*.zip

  53. 1.ADDING PERSONS TO TREE (MENU "EDIT/ADD") ****************************

  58.    AT FIRST the program will ask you the name of the new person.
  59. -Write the name the way you like.If the name is longer than 30 
  60.  characters,the program "loses" the rest of it.On the graphics screen the
  61.  names appear about 20 characters long.
  62. -In this field you should  write only the first name and the last name.
  63.  (There is more space for the second names (and for more information) 
  64.  in the "comments-field".)
  65. -If you have several persons in the family with the same name you must 
  66.  differentiate their names somehow (for example by birth year, by second 
  67.  name or by the father's name etc.) For example Kalle -39 Tappinen or 
  68.  Kalle T Tappinen (=Taavetti) or Kalle vs Tappinen (=Ville's son).

  70.    NEXT you shall write the birth- and the death-dates.
  71. -You can use up to 12 characters
  72.

  74.    NEXT the program will ask "FATHER/MOTHER (by whom related in this tree)?"
  75. -Write the name of the parent by whom this person belongs to this family tree.

  77.    THEN you'll get the question "MOTHER/FATHER"
  78. -Write the name of the other parent.
  79.  
  80.    THEN you'll get the question "SPOUSE"  
  81. -Write the name of the spouse (max 30 characters) or pass by "ENTER".   
  82. -If the person has had more than one spouse,you should write here the 
  83.  one which is most important for yourself.The names of the others can
  84.  be written in the comments-field.

  86.  FINALLY the question "COMMENTS"
  87. -In this field you can write 10 lines information about the person
  88. -For example things about life-work,dwelling places...second names... 
  89.  spouses etc.

  91. -The easiest way of adding persons is adding on "9-branch"-graphic-mode.
  92.  So you don't need to write the names of the parents.

  107. Function "SEARCH" gives you the information of the selected person. 
  108. In the graphic modes you can get the most important notes by clicking
  109. the right mouse button.

  112. On "9-branch"-graphic mode you can also search by name: click the left mouse 
  113. button in the box  "search" and type the name of the wanted person.
  114. -You have that person in the center of the tree!

  127. ...ABOUT OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  129. Menu "EXTRA/CONFIGURE" contains the following functions:
  130. -change language finnish/english (suomi/englanti)
  131. -SPEED : you can speed up your program : the picture effects will be off
  132.  (by the start of the program, by file search, saving and ending of the
  133.  program).
  134. -SOUND EFFECTS ON/OFF.
  135. -BACKGROUND COLOR SETTING FOR THE GRAPHIC MODES

  137. Menu "WIEV/PHOTOS" shows *.PCX-pictures (scanned photos etc.) The latest
  138. versions (october -95 and later) allove you to paste "labels" on the faces 
  139. of the people. So the names of the persons do not get lost ! You just
  140. click the right mouse button and type the text and press ENTER. You have
  141. 40 characters to use. The file picturename.nim saves the texts, maximum
  142. 50 texts.
  143. You see the saved texts when moving the mouse cursor near the note places.

  152. USING GRAPHIC MODES           ************************************

  157. In the graphic modes ("5-BRANCHES" AND "9-BRANCHES") you can move in the 
  158. family tree from branch to branch by clicking the left mouse button.
  159. Click the person you want , so you get him/her to the center.
  160.  
  161. Pressing the RIGHT button brings the person information on screen.
  162. IT STAYS ON SCREEN , UNTIL YOU RELEASE THE BUTTON.If yoy have a VGA monitor
  163. and You have attached *.PCX-pictures (photos) to the records, the picture
  164. comes now on screen. It stays until you press a button.
  165.  
  166. THE MIDDLE BUTTON allows you to change the person information while 
  167. you are in the graphic mode.
  168.  
  169. A STAR ("*") inside the graphic bar tells that the person is dead.
  170. "<"-sign tells that the person has descendants in the tree.

  173. ...THE EASIEST WAY OF ADDING PEOPLE TO THE FAMILY TREE : in the "9-branches
  174. graphic mode" click the box "add" below and follow the instructions
  175. on the screen!

  177. The "9 branches" - mode allows you to shape the family tree 
  178.    on screen in over 10000 ways !!!! ( only in SUKUTARU !!! )
  179.         - zooming , 4 options
  180.         - placing of names ("placing") 3 alternatives
  181.         - color/frame , 4 choices
  182.         - date of birth / spouse name , 2 options
  183.         - graphic mode ("CONFIGURE") , about 10 choices in VGA
  184.         - background color ("CONFIGURE") , 16 alternatives
  185.    -I'm sure You find a suitable way for printing the graphic screen !

  187.   To get the graphic sreen printed on paper You must type the command 
  188.  "graphics" in DOS before starting the program, and then use "Print Scrn"
  189.   when You have the tree on screen.  
  190.   You get more information of the command "graphics"  from 
  191.   DOS by typing "help graphics".
